A Gateway Into the World of Science & Innovation

STEM Scholars presents the National STEM Discovery Initiative — a dynamic, curriculum-aligned science and innovation programme designed specifically for South African high school learners.

This initiative empowers learners to engage in real-world scientific investigations, develop critical thinking, and apply the scientific method through interactive workshops and national-level competitions.

Participating schools become part of a provincial and national network that supports excellence in science education, fosters innovation, and prepares learners to thrive in a knowledge-based, global economy.

"Tomorrow's scientists, innovators, and entrepreneurs are sitting in today's classrooms — they just need the right exposure and guidance."

— STEM Scholars, 2026 Programme Proposal

What Your School Gains

01

Exclusive Access to Mentors & Scientists

Learners engage directly with scientists, innovators, and industry professionals through workshops, lab sessions, and mentorship — gaining first-hand insight into the science and business of innovation.

02

World-Class Facilities

Selected learners spend a day in research labs and innovation spaces at institutions like Wits University and the CSIR — seeing real experiments, real technology, and real possibilities beyond the classroom.

03

Recognition, Prizes & Career Opportunities

Participants stand a chance to win awards, provincial/national recognition, and vacation work opportunities at partners including Trichome Biotechnologies. Winners receive one-on-one career coaching and lab tours.

Two Streams.
One Mission.

Each programme is tailored to a key developmental stage in the learner's STEM journey — structured, accessible, and highly engaging for both learners and educators.

Both Trial by Science and The Next Scipreneur follow the same proven 12-week structure — only the subject matter, age group, and final challenge differ.

1
Week 1–2

Programme Launch & Call for Entries

A mini-demo introduces learners to the programme, expectations, and entry process. Info packs are distributed to teachers and learners at participating schools.

2
Week 3

Proposal / Idea Submission Deadline

Learners submit a 1-page proposal outlining their question, hypothesis or problem, and basic approach. Shortlisting begins immediately after.

3
Week 4

Top 10 Teams Selected

Submissions are judged on clarity, creativity, and scientific thinking. The Top 10 teams per school advance to the workshop phase.

4
Week 5–8

Workshops & Mentorship Phase

Weekly virtual sessions with scientists, researchers, and entrepreneurs guide each team through the core skills of their stream — from experimental design to pitch-building.

5
Week 9–10

School-Level Competition

Final submissions are presented at school level. Certificates are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams.

6
Week 11–12

Provincial Showcase & Final Round

Top 10 Gauteng teams advance to the Provincial Showcase, presenting live to a judging panel — with prizes, networking, and recognition for the top finishers.
